A Humble Prayer

An Appeal

Allahabad or Prayag is one of the largest city of the State of Uttar Pradesh, India which is an inland peninsula surrounded by the rivers Ganga and Yamuna from three sides. This city is known as a Historian’s Paradise as well as versatility of religions and spirituality. History lies embedded everywhere, in it’s fields, forests and settlements. This ancient town is illustrated by supposed references in the Vedas to Prayag which is existed as a town as early as 600 B.C. Apart from the fragrance of History, Allahabad is also glorified for Kumbha Mela or Triveni Sangam among the devotees all over the world .This holy place was sanctified by the holy touch of great spiritual leaders from the time immortal. Above all, Allahabad is also well known among the devotees of Ramakrishna order as one of the oldest branch center of Belur Math and for its philanthropic activities from years including Magh Mela or Kumbha Mela period.

Started by Swami Vijnanananda, an engineer brother monk of Swami Vivekananda in the year 1910, this Math proves its excellence completing more than 100 years in the service of mankind without discrimination of caste, creed and religion. After the construction of the Belur Math Monastery, on the advice of Swamiji, Swami Vijnanananda came to Allahabad in 1900 to start a centre here. First, Vijnanananda used to stay at rented two rooms of a two story building which was named ‘Brahmavadin Club’. Later in the year 1910 he able to procure funds and succeeded in erecting a permanent building on a small plot of land for Ramakrishna Math in the mutthiganj area of the city. As long as 28 years he lived here and became a legendary for his silent but vigorous spiritual practices which is a vital cause to change the course of many lives. From the very beginning, Swami Vijnanananda started some benevolent activities for the poor citizens in and around Allahabad District with his limited resources which is still now being followed by Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama, Allahabad but in a larger scale.
